A new option in hardsurface to consider is Luxury Vinyl Planks and Tiles (LVT).  Laminate flooring might be considered a close relative.  Like laminate, LVT is available in both wood and tile patterns and comes in both planks and tiles.  Unlike laminate, which is a wood product, LVT is made from a durable, high quality vinyl which makes it impervious to water.  LVT makes a great alternative to wood and laminate for rooms like kitchens, utility rooms and bathrooms as well as basements.  LVT is also very durable, but can scratch easier than laminate.    Two types of LVT are available:  floating and glue-down.
